Pomodoro - a productivity timer for your Mac

PomodoroThe Pomodoro technique is a time-management productivity technique that involves giving yourself a set amount of time to work on a specific task, and then a short rest period. Finding timers that are specifically suited to this task can be troublesome, but our buddy Steven Sande over at TUAW has already done the hard work for us. And it turns out the best Mac tool for performing the Pomodoro Technique is called simply Pomodoro.

At its most basic level, Pomodoro is a timer. But because it's intended to be used in a productivity methodology, it includes some extra features that can be really useful. For example, you can actually set up Pomodoro names (which are essentially task names), so that when each cycle comes around your computer actually prompts you for what you should be working on. Each pomodoro is then logged, so you can go back and see what you've been working on.

There are all sorts of customizations that allow you to make Pomodoro work the way that you like to work - you can dive into the preferences to find them. As an unobtrusive menu-bar timer, Pomodoro has become my newest and most beloved productivity timer.

Nielsen Three Screen Report: 99 percent of video still viewed on a TV

Nielsen Three Screes Report
Yes you read that right, despite internet video growing at a rapid pace, 99 percent of video viewed in America is still done the old fashioned way. And although this is pretty crazy in and of itself, what's even more shocking is that while we've all but completely abounded linear TV, most only use their DVRs to watch about an hour of TV a week. But what this report really seems to prove more than anything else is that just like TV didn't kill radio, the internet and DVRs aren't going to kill TV as we know it, and instead the total number of hours wasted in front of one of the three screens is just going to keep getting higher and higher until the whole world comes crashing down -- or something like that.

Firewire's future on DVRs is up for debate

Mandated by the FCC, Firewire ports have been commonplace, and sadly mostly unused, on our HD DVRs for some time, but recent requests by Intel and TiVo to forego their inclusion have brought the situation to a head. Multichannel News reports the 1394 Trade Association is calling Intel's waiver request "too broad" and cited its wide deployment as reasons it should still be included. Beyond some driver hacks to enable transfers of DVR'd programming, it seems like Ethernet and USB are getting the lion's share of use on boxes, wile emerging DLNA and MoCa tech makes moving content around even easier, is anyone actually getting a benefit from the extra port on their boxes as we go into 2010?

More info on Spec Ops: The Line's story revealed

Filed under:

2K Games has now issued their official press release announcing Spec Ops: The Line, their revival of the military shooter series from developer Yager. The press release offers up some actual storyline details for the first time, confirming that the game takes place in the city state of Dubai where for some unknown reason a massive series of sandstorms has devastated the region.

Your player character in the game is U.S. Army Captain Martin Walker. He leads a team of Delta Squad members into the city to try to rescue U.S. Army Colonel John Konrad and his squad who stayed behind to protect those who could not escape the sandstorms. Judging from the trailer shown on the Video Game Awards on Saturday night that rescue attempt does not go well. In addition to the game's single player campaign there will also be some kind of multiplayer element for Spec Ops: The Line although details are not mentioned. The game itself is not due for release until sometime in parent company Take Two Interactive's 2011 fiscal year which begins on November 1, 2010.

Vertu V makes no concessions: $730 BT headset, $490 card reader, and $330 ballpoint pen

Because nothing says "I ain't afraid of no recession" like plopping down an excess amount of Benjamins for a Bluetooth earpiece, Vertu has unveiled its V accessories collection. $780 gets you a Bluetooth 2.1-compliant earpiece with 6 hours of charge time (same one we saw hit the FCC recently, we suspect), $490 for a USB memory card reader that as a consolation prize comes with a 2GB microSD card, and as for the ballpoint pen, asking price is a cool $330. For all three purchases, it's recommended you purchase the special leather case for protection -- and if these gifts are already comfortably in your price range, hey, why not?

[Thanks, Shayjd]

Lancôme Selects Julia Roberts as "Global Ambassadress"

Main Entry: am·bas·sa·dress
Pronunciation: \am-ba-s"-dr"s, "m-, im-\
Function: noun
Date: 1594

1 : a woman who is an ambassador
2 : the wife of an ambassador

Lancôme has bestowed the first definition on Julia Roberts in the ongoing epic "Another Day, Another Celebrity Endorsement." Cynicism aside, Lancôme has, through the years, had a bevy of beautiful women endorsing its products -- Isabella Rossellini, Kate Winslet, Anne Hathaway, and numerous models. Roberts is the newest, according to a WWD exclusive:

"By her remarkable personality and career, Julia Roberts is an emblematic woman of her time," said Youcef Nabi, president of Lancôme International. "Her exceptional talent, her radiance, and her strong commitments perfectly echo Lancôme's values. We are convinced she will embody the brand in the most sublime way possible."

Lancôme executives declined to share details on the relationship between Roberts and the brand, including the amount the actress is being paid to sell the products, the length of her contract, and specific duties, saying more would be revealed early next year.

Roberts, who is said to command salaries upward of $20 million for her acting projects, is in post-production on two films - Eat, Pray, Love, and Valentine's Day.

The WWD article goes on to say that "getting Roberts - or any other star of her caliber - to appear in U.S. advertising a decade ago would have been a longshot, although many stars consented to appear in product advertising outside the U.S. ... however, the celebrity culture has become ubiquitous, and the stigma once associated with selling products to middle America seems to have disappeared."
